Giuseppe Verdi’s Attila returns to the historic Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where it premiered in 1846, in a new production. Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 20, 2025, it will be broadcast live on RAI 3 radio https://www.raiplaysound.it/radio3 at 7:00 PM local time (8:00 PM Greek time).
Attila is the ninth opera composed by Verdi, and probably the most Venetian of all his works, as the opera’s prologue depicts the very founding of the city by refugees from nearby Aquileia who escaped the wrath of the Hun invader, known as the “Scourge of God.”
The new production, directed by Leo Muscato, is conducted by maestro Sebastiano Rolli (known in Athens from his appearance at the Olympia Theatre) with a remarkable cast of performers: Michele Pertusi (Attila), Vladimir Stoyanov (Ezio), Anastasia Bartoli (Odabella), Antonio Poli (Foresto), Andrea Schifaudo (Uldino), Francesco Milanese (Pope Leo I).
As early reviews describe a rather straightforward direction without surprises, the absence of visuals from the radio broadcast will be an opportunity for greater concentration on the musical performance, which is also reported as excellent.
Meanwhile, you can always watch the previous staging of the same work at La Fenice with visuals on the Theatre’s YouTube channel, featuring the same protagonist in the title role and alongside him the Greek soprano Dimitra Theodossiou.
