Observing what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic and the particular ideological and political conditions prevailing there, which have begun to spread here, to our home in Europe, many are raising their voices and asking European leaders, as well as citizens in general, to stand tall and highlight the values of democracy and culture of the Old Continent.

In this context, a few days ago I read a piece of news that offers a glimmer of hope (see here), as the institutions of the European Union seem to be moving in the right direction. Specifically, the European Central Bank is preparing to launch a process in 2026 to introduce new Euro banknotes in the coming years. The entire discussion revolves around what will be depicted on them, and there are two proposals: highlighting Europe’s undisputed superiority in the global history of the spirit, or showcasing the flora and fauna of our continent.

With all due respect to the beautiful birds and lovely European rivers, I don’t think there can be a comparison between Callas and Beethoven (two of the six figures proposed) and any undisputed natural beauty, which one can find elsewhere on the planet. Beethoven, however, was born here, on this continent, and is a hallmark of the power of the European world and European culture. And if he isn’t a hallmark, then perhaps it’s time he became one, to change our reality and make all of us who had the good fortune to be born here and walk in the same places as those who shaped the global course of culture and civilization feel a little closer. I hope those who are called upon to choose, choose wisely.
