Online Streams from Verdi’s Homeland
The tradition of opera is deeply rooted in the Emilia-Romagna region, the homeland of Giuseppe Verdi and also of great performers such as Carlo Bergonzi, Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci, and Mirella Freni. Even today, it boasts the highest concentration of historic theatres in Italy and offers a rich lyrical and musical activity.
OperaStreaming is an online platform that offers free broadcasts via YouTube from the most important opera houses in the region: Bologna, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara, Ravenna, and Rimini. This initiative is based on TeatroNet, an innovative live streaming program created in 2012 by the Department of Culture of the Emilia-Romagna Region and carried out in collaboration with EDUNOVA – University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco inaugurated yesterday (October 24) the current artistic season of the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti – Freni in Modena and will be broadcast live tomorrow (afternoon performance, Sunday, October 26). The new co-production with OperaLombardia and the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca is directed by Federico Grazzini, who has directed the same opera for the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, as well as many other operas including the Wexford Opera Festival, the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Teatro Regio di Parma, the Opéra de Nice, and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
As the director notes: “In Nabucco, the opposing tendencies of the human soul confront each other: the dark, violent, and oppressive one of the oppressors, and the bright, compassionate, and conscious one, brought to life by the hope of the oppressed. We wanted to combine elements of the past, present, and future to tell a contemporary fairy tale that touches today’s audience on a deeper and more emotional level.”
