The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra was founded on May 1, 1882; since 1991, this day has been dedicated to the Europakonzert. The “Europe Concert” is held annually in a different venue – a hall, museum, or monument – in Europe, chosen for its cultural and historical significance. The concert pays tribute to the diversity of the European continent and to the European Union. In 2004, the Europe Concert took place in Athens.
This year, the traditional concert will be held and broadcast live from the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Apulia, Southern Italy, and will be conducted by Riccardo Muti. The renowned conductor needs no introduction, and his collaboration with the orchestra now spans more than 50 years. The concert program includes orchestral overtures and ballet music from operas by Gioachino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi in the first part, and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in the second part.
The concert will be broadcast live at 11:00 AM Italian local time (12:00 PM Greek time) by several television and online channels.
