This year, the artistic direction of Danae and Kiveli Dörken turns its gaze to the Aristotelian concept of “Eudaimonia.” In an era where the notion of happiness has often been equated with ephemeral consumption and digital illusion, the festival proposes a return to the essence: eudaimonia as the result of a meaningful life, built upon virtue, temperance, and inner balance.
The program is structured as a spiritual journey. Starting from Mytilene Castle (8/12) and passing through the Castle of Ancient Antissa (8/13) and the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production in Agia Paraskevi (8/16), the musicians will lead the audience to Molyvos for the grand concerts at the beachfront park of Delfinia Hotel (8/17-19). This organic connection of music with the historical landmarks and natural landscape of Lesvos remains the great comparative advantage of the institution.
The list of this year’s invited guests confirms the international stature of the event. Great soloists, such as violinists Antje Weithaas and Simos Papanas, cellists Benedict Klöckner and Andreas Brantelid, percussion pioneer Pascal Schumacher, and the prolific electronic music composer Sven Helbig, will meet on stage. The MIMF is not a festival of imported productions; it is a workshop where artists coexist, rehearse together on the island, and create unique chamber ensembles specifically for these evenings.
At the same time, with the famous “Musical Moments” – these sudden, spontaneous appearances of musicians in the alleys, the port, and the tavernas – classical music is demystified and becomes part of the daily life of residents and vacationers. Furthermore, the steadfast commitment to educational action, with the Concert for Children and Youth on August 18, demonstrates a deep sense of responsibility for the future of the region.
In a period when the Aegean is often in the spotlight for geopolitical or tourist reasons, the Molyvos Festival reminds us that Lesvos remains a great cradle of humanism and culture. The “Eudaimonia” it promises this year is not an escape from reality, but a conscious proposal for how we can rediscover our center through high art.
