Dimitrios Kiousopoulos is a music critic and journalist. He studied History, Archaeology, and Classical Studies at the University of Athens and the University of Edinburgh, and pursued postgraduate studies in History, focusing on the social history of music and opera, at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, the Berliner Kolleg für Vergleichende Geschichte Europas (BKVGE Freie Universität / Humboldt-Universität) in Berlin, and the European University Institute in Florence.

Thomas Hampson teaches at the Heidelberg Lied Academy.

Heidelberg, the picturesque university town in Baden-Württemberg, is inextricably linked with the spirit and history of German Romanticism, making it an ideal setting for the Heidelberger Frühling Liedakademie, Heidelberg’s Spring Academy of Classical Song (Lied). The institution educates and promotes talented young singers and accompanying pianists from around the world who specialize in Lied, the musical genre that combines poetry with music to create a true “musical poem.” A characteristic of Lied is that composers are inspired by usually pre-existing poems they deem worthy, rather than by lyrics written specifically for musical setting, and with the music, they add a new dimension to the poetry.

At the heart of the annual program are masterclasses with baritone Thomas Hampson, who has been the Academy’s artistic director since 2011. Today and tomorrow, you can watch his lessons live on the Academy’s website and its YouTube channel. The teaching is partly in German and partly in English, but above all, the example matters.
