Mavrodaphne
One of the country’s rising red varieties is Mavrodaphne (in its dry vinification). Most of us are certainly familiar with sweet Mavrodaphne from the sweet wines of Patras.
Kefalonia is one of the wine regions with great potential in the production of this variety, which has been making its mark on Greece’s wine map in recent years. Madame H. in Kefalonia is organically cultivated at Haritatou Estate, aged for 12 months in oak barrels. The 2019 vintage is distinguished by its dense and impenetrable color, while oak elements intertwine with fruity notes of plums, blackberries, black cherries, blueberries, and expressive bay leaves (one of the possible origins of the variety’s name).
Spices (peppers), bitter chocolate, leather notes on the finish, a medium+ bodied palate, sufficient acidity, lively tannins, and a medium+ length aftertaste constitute the profile of Madame H.

Harilaos Perpessas (1907-1995)
Christ Symphony
The indigenous Greek Mavrodaphne variety in its dry vinification is a wonderful wine suitable for Greek cuisine and, of course, for Easter meals. In the religious spirit of the season, it is worth listening to the music of a Greek composer, the Christ Symphony by Harilaos Perpessas (1907-1995). Although the name is not familiar to the general public, he can be considered one of the most successful Greek composers, as Dimitris Mitropoulos performed this work in New York in 1950 with enormous success, so much so that the work was replayed in subsequent years. The fact that it was primarily scheduled in December implies an initial association with Christmas, but its explicit inspiration from the Revelation of John clearly connects it with the Resurrection as well.
On Holy Wednesday, we heard it performed by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leo McFall, at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera, concluding the 3rd Festival of Sacred Music.
